CAIRO (Egypt)
February 2010
We spent four great days in Cairo taking pictures of the energetic and friendly city with an Olympus Pen E-P2, despite having to put up with a certain level of smog. All of Central Cairo's distinctive quarters can easily be explored on foot, which we did. We also visited the great pyramids of Giza and other amazing pyramids in nearby Saqqara and Dahshur. The E-P2 has a shooting mode called Art Filter that simulates traditional effects like grainy film, cross process, diorama, and pinhole. In normal modes, the E-P2 is a responsive camera. Using the Art Filter mode slows down shooting operation considerably but we think it is a great example of making creative use of digital technology. Of course these effects can be done by software like Photoshop afterward, but what's the fun in that? We decided to shoot the entire Cairo portfolio using the pinhole mode. Except for a couple of images, we took all of the pictures with the 17mm F2.8 pancake lens (34mm in 35mm equivalent).
