The Lumix TS2 is a second generation of tough and waterproof camera from Panasonic, which is marketed toward the active outdoor person. We tried the TS2's predecessor, TS1, in Oahu last year and were pleased with its performance, both in and out of the water. Compared to the TS1, the TS2 has a few but appreciable improvements: 10m/33ft depth tolerance, slightly more responsive controls, better door hatches, an external silicone cover jacket that protects the camera and provides a better grip underwater.
In June, we went to the Island of Maui to take pictures with a Lumix TS2 (and a Sony Cyber-shot TX5, which is reviewed separately). We enjoyed using the bright yellow TS2 which we found easy and responsive to use on dry land and underwater, equally. We are very pleased with the pictures taken with the camera. The image quality is very good for a compact.
Beside from snorkeling, we took the TS2 SCUBA diving in deeper water. The camera worked flawlessly within the rated depth of 33 feet. We are not supposed to, but when we took the TS2 deeper than the 33' limit, its operations became unpredictable. When we took it down to 60', the camera locked up completely and could not be operated. Fortunately, the camera returns to normal operations after returning from the deep!
Overall, this is a well-rounded and excellent compact that is perfect for an active outdoors person who wants a camera always by his/her side, ready for action. It's hard to find another camera as versatile, but we do find one in the Sony Cyber-shot TX5.
