If you have been waiting for a point and shoot camera with a large DSLR-size sensor, then wait no further: the Canon PowerShot G1 X is it. With its large size sensor, the camera produces pictures with DLSR-like image quality that currently no other compact can match.
However, the larger sensor also requires a bigger body and lens making the G1 X bulky, even when compared to the hefty G12. This is not necessarily a bad thing because the superbly-built camera still balances well in hand and is very comfortable to use.
The excellent but bigger optics takes up more space and doesn't retract fully inside the camera body, a lens cap is also needed to cover the lens.
Another trade-off for having a larger sensor and lens is that the G1 X can't focus as close as the previous Gs. It's not bad but it's definitely not macro. An optional filter adapter with close-up filters can provide some relief for macro shooters.
We like using the G1 X and love the high image quality pictures it produces, but with its size and price, the camera has many formidable compact-mirrorless interchangeable-lens competitors from Sony, Panasonic, Olympus, and from Canon itself with the new EOS M system.
Perhaps, the camera is better appreciated if seen as a hybrid between a compact and DSLR, with features and limitations inherent from both sides.
