BARCELONA (Spain)
March 2012
After a wintry Berlin stay, we were fortunate to find a few balmy days to thaw in Barcelona, and to take pictures of the city with Canon's new superzoom SX40 HS. We don't normally use full size superzooms because of their size, and we don't think we'd really need a telephoto focal length longer than 300mm (35mm equivalent) for our style of photography. However, the 35x zoom range, from 24mm to 840mm, of the Canon PowerShot SX40 HS seems too ridiculously extreme to ignore, so we decided to give the camera a try in Barcelona - a city with a few interesting high vantage points from which to put the super-telephoto end to use. Even with its radical Modernista architecture led by GaudÃ, we wanted to capture Barcelona in timeless sepia monochrome and square 1:1 image format. While we still don't find a real need for the extreme telephone end, it works incredibly well, even handheld, and we certainly had a lot of fun zooming all the way out.
